Boothroyd "gutted" by England exit but hails character of team

England Under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd was left "gutted" and "sick" following his side's heartbreaking semi-final shoot-out exit to Germany at Euro 2017.

U21 match between England and Germany went in favor for the German team. The score was 2-2 in the regular game, and then came the penalties.

England actually started well and Germany's defense repeatedly gifted them goal-scoring chances. Unfortunately for Boothroyd his players wasted them all.

Nathaniel Chalobah put two free headers over the bar, although the worse miss belonged to Abraham, who unmarked, four yards out, put his header straight at goalkeeper Julian Pollersbeck.

England created only one clear chance in open play - Will Hughes sliding a ball through for Gray to run on to, but his first attempt was blocked and the second saved by Pollersbeck.

Germany, though, were starting to get into their stride, repeatedly passing through England's blunt midfield and eventually got their reward as the dangerous Jeremy Toljan exploited the space out wide to cross for Selke to head home.

In the end, England lost in penalties game 4-3.
